Paul's Greeting and the Purpose of the Law Against False Teaching

1 Timothy 1:1-11

1
Chapter 1
1 Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus according to the command of God our Savior and Christ Jesus our hope 2 To Timothy, my genuine child in faith: grace, mercy, and peace from God our Father and Christ Jesus our Lord. 3 Just as I exhorted you to remain in Ephesus when I went on to Macedonia, so that you might command certain people not to teach differently. 4 nor to pay attention to myths and endless genealogies, which provide speculations rather than God's stewardship in faith— 5 But the goal of the commandment is love from a pure heart and a good conscience and sincere faith. 6 Some, having missed the mark, have turned aside into idle talk, 7 wanting to be teachers of the law, not understanding either what they say or what they confidently affirm. 8 We know that the law is good if anyone uses it lawfully. 9 knowing this, that the law is not laid down for the righteous but for lawless and insubordinate, ungodly and sinners, unholy and profane, patricides and matricides, manslayers, 10 to fornicators, to men who bed males, to slave-traders, to liars, to perjurers, and to anything else that opposes the sound teaching, 11 according to the gospel of the glory of the blessed God, with which I was entrusted.
